Mother’s Day is the third most celebrated holiday in the world. Only Christmas and Easter are more popular in America. The first Mother’s Day celebrated was organized on May 10, 1908. The purposes of the service were:
TO HONOR MOTHERS
TO BRING FAMILIES TOGETHER
TO MAKE BETTER CHILDREN
TO BRIGHTEN THE LIVES OF GOOD MOTHERS
While those purposes are biblically based, they suggest concepts which are under attack today and are often under appreciated in American society. For example, motherhood is viewed by some as being involuntary servitude or being exclusive of marriage. The home appears to be disintegrating and children honoring and obeying their parents are in many cases a relic of the past.
In God’s plan, however, the home is still the basis fabric of society. It must be the basic unit of the Christian family (Genesis 2:24; Ephesians 5:33; 6:1,3). The mother has always served a significant function in the family.
Thus, as we celebrate Mother’s Day lets focus on God’s intent for Mothers and the family and the home. This celebration will endure not because of a designated day of the year but because of God’s design.
